Ingredients

  • Crust:
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • Filling:
  • 3 apples, peeled, cored and cut into thin slices
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp melted butter
  • Topping:
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup Diamond of California® Chopped Walnuts
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

The Steps

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9×13 baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the butter and brown sugar. Beat on high for 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Add the salt and flour, mix until just combined.
  3. Press the dough into the bottom of the baking dish in an even layer. Use a fork to poke several holes in the bottom of the crust and bake for 12 minutes.
  4. While the shortbread bakes, toss the apples with the cinnamon, nutmeg and melted butter. Spread the apple mixture in an even layer over the baked shortbread.
  5. In a small bowl, combine all of the topping ingredients. Use your finger tips to combine until pea sized pieces form. Sprinkle evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for an additional 35 to 40 minutes.
  7. Cool completely in pan before slicing.
